This circuit is designed and simulated Proteus 7.10. In this circuit you will learn how a dc voltage doubler is made from ac voltage source. This is a very simple circuit and working of this circuit is given below: 1. Very few components are used in this circuit. Two diodes, a 5 ohm resistor, two capacitors and one ON/OFF switch. 2. This is a diode clamp circuit. 3. One capacitor is charged on positive cycle and other capacitor is charged on negative cycle. 4. Half voltage appears on capacitor C1 and half voltage appears on capacitor C2. 5. As both capacitors are in series, therefore total voltage is the sum of both capacitors and we get double output voltage. 6. The input is AC voltage but the output is DC voltage. 7. A series resistor is added to limit the inrush current. 8. Some voltages will drop across series resistor and 0.7V will drop across each diode. This drop can be seen in animation. 9. Series resistor protects diodes and capacitor by limiting the current. 10. Series resistor can be bypass by adding relay in parallel with series resistor after charging the capacitor to avoid voltage drop and power loss. Applications: 1. This circuit is used to converter ac voltage into dc voltage. 2. This circuit is used to boost dc voltage from ac voltage with current limit. Note: Parallel relay will be added in next circuit.
